Michael Argenziano, MD
Director, Minimally Invasive & Robotic Cardiac Surgery Program

The Minimally Invasive and Robotic Cardiac Surgery Program at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center (NYPH/Columbia) offers our patients the latest advances in cardiac surgery techniques. The mission of the program is to surgically treat cardiac disease through smaller incisions, resulting in:

  • Decreased postoperative pain
  • Less suppression of the immune system
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Improved cosmetic results after surgery

Michael Argenziano, MD leads the program, whose surgeons have performed over 800 minimally invasive operations to date, including:

  • Atrial Fibrillation Surgery
  • Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Graft
  • Valve Repair & Replacement Surgery

Since May 2001, an advanced surgical robot, the da Vinci Surgical System, has been part of the cardiac surgery team at NYPH/Columbia. The million-dollar device, manufactured by Intuitive Surgical, Inc. of Sunnyvale, CA, offers three-dimensional visualization and remarkable technical precision, which has improved our surgeons' ability to perform difficult procedures with greater accuracy. Columbia surgeons have the largest U.S. experience in robotic cardiac surgery and perform the following robotic procedures:

  • Atrial Fibrillation Surgery
  • Atrial Septal Defect Repair
  • Biventricular Pacing
  • Robotically-Assisted & Totally Endoscopic Coronary Artery Bypass Graft
  • Mitral Valve Repair
  • Thoracoscopic Surgery of the Lungs, Esophagus, and Mediastinum
